70's Reinvention

Sunday, February 25, 2018

A 2018 trend already starting to show waves of coming through into commercial interiors and homeware collections is the surprising reinvention of the 70s colour palette. For some this may be the moment they've been waiting for, to re-live their childhood and sense nostalgia just by sitting in a space. However, for some this may be a cause for concern rather than a blessing in disguise, as often, all many can think of in 70s interior design is that overbearing and eyesore avocado bathroom.

70s reinvention however, has a contemporary twist. Gone, are the dull and dirty colours. A brighter colour palette as been created using inspiration from the 70s colours and are very much similar, but are current shades and matted for 2018. These tinted colours are livened up with velvets and gold accents to glamorise the interior making the trend more chic than your mothers childhood living room. Yes, this look is quite bolder than the monochrome Scandinavian we’re all very found of, but 2018 new colours should be celebrated and woven into our neutral interiors for a personality driven room.

The colours of mustard, plumb, burgundy, sage and salmon pinks act as the new tones to either use in combination or separately  Neutrals and mixed metals work perfectly with these colours to create a well balanced space to make for a relaxing contemporary take on mid century modern. Terrazzo is another 70s material thats due to take over 2018 homeware collections, yet taken on in a more abstract and feminine way. It looks perfect on nests of tables, lamp bases and even the traditional use of floor tiles for an interesting and stylish pattern in your home.

Small details such a more retro accessories can look great as finishing touches to the space, but don’t go too overboard. Lighting inspired by the era such as circular shaped pendants and wall lights are key to the look of this trend, but instead take a more abstract approach to the design of the lights. Circles are really important to use in the space whether thats through lights, mirrors or even wall art simplistic shapes in design were a favoured design in the 70s due to the new Bauhaus movement. For our bums, take a perch on circular furniture like club chairs or shell backed chairs for a very plush and stylish living area.

This trend may be a little tricky to master, and make you wonder if you’re going backwards in design rather than forwards, but aren’t new designs all inspired by the past? Inspiration has to start somewhere I guess.
